The bright thing you see in the south just after dark is the mighty planet Jupiter. Brave the cold and take a look through binoculars or any small telescope. The big ‘scope at Dogstar is not ideal for planetary imaging but I captured about and hour of time lapse images using a program that tries to compensate for atmospheric distortion using a technique called “lucky imaging” where thousands of individual frames are taken and the bad ones discarded. The GIF movie runs forward and backward for a few seconds. You can see the Great Red Spot and Io, one of the largest of Jupiter’s 85 moons.
