Here comes a bright comet

Go out this weekend at sunset where you have a clear view to the western horizon and look for Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS. It’s a really big one and observers in the southern hemisphere report that is almost naked eye visible. It’s now visible in the northern hemisphere (check Spaceweather.com for recent images of aura and comets). It will get steadily higher in the coming days as it moves up from the setting sun but also will dim rapidly. The chart below is for Balsam at 7:30 PM on October 12th.

The photo was taken by Michael Mattiazzo during dawn twilight on October 1st from Swan Hill, Victoria, Australia. He used a a Canon 6D + Sigma lens at 50mm f/2.8. iso1600. 15 sec. (Image credit: Michael Mattiazzo). Once it rounded the sun it went from being visible after dawn to just after sunset.
