Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from Dogstar Observatory. It was great to see everyone at the party last night. The club staff did an outstanding job as always.

Unfortunately the weather has severely limited our stargazing activities over the holidays. Hopefully there will be some cold dry weekends over the winter when we can find some interesing sights to view.

In the mean time, take advantage of some indoor stargazing opportunites. NASA’s New Horizon spacecraft flew pass the minor planet Ultima Thule just after midnight after its amazing observations of Pluto in 2015. There will be images posted this morning of a strange and very distant member of our solar system. Brian May – lead guitarist of Queen (who also holds as PhD in astrophysics), released a new single to commerate the occasion.

If you are interested in exploring more about astronomy and are thinking of purchasing a telescope be sure to check out on-line reveiws and articles like this one from Sky and Telescope magazine. You can also search for telescopes and binoculars by price range and type at reputable online dealers like Optcorp and High Point Scientific. Some reputable brands to consider are Celestron, Meade, Orion and Skywatcher.

If anyone would like more specific advice on telescope types, price ranges, etc. be sure to drop me an email and I will be happy to help you research options.

Jim
